Frenchie: New Bistro Cooking

It’s been a while since I’ve done a book review around here. It’s not that I haven’t been reading, it’s just that I took a little break from reviewing books. I found that I’d become so consumed with reading books for review that I was missing out on all these great newly released books that had everyone talking. So, I decided it was time to call a time out from book reviews for a bit.

At least, so I thought.

Apparently, I also decided to see how many times I could fit the word “review” into a single paragraph.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that I missed doing my reviews. So, I found a middle ground. I’m going back to reviewing cookbooks on the blog, but I think I’ll hold off on reviewing any novels for a while. I’m still wading through all the books that I loaded onto my Kindle and never read.

Can you believe I still haven’t read Gone Girl? It’s been on my Kindle for WELL over a year and I still haven’t read it. That’s embarrassing.

(Just in case you’re curious, these are the books that are currently keeping me occupied right now. I’m on book two and can say that I’m definitely hooked!)

Okay, so that business aside, let’s get to my review of Frenchie: New Bistro Cooking.

I love that this book embraces authentic Parisian bistro cooking, but with inspiration from the other places in the world where the author, Greg Marchand has lived. (London, Hong Kong, New York…) I personally love cookbooks with a global perspective and this book definitely embraces that.

One of the things that I loved about this book is that it’s divided into four sections to coincide with the seasons. The recipes listed in each section will allow you to cook with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and not leave you searching for items when they’re unavailable or not producing their peak flavors.

This book is also filled with my favorite style of food photography. Crisp, clean, and simple. There are no elaborate styled scenes, the images are all about the food. But displayed beautifully, which makes it even better.

I will say that many of these recipes are not dishes that you’re going to make on an average weeknight. While very few of the recipes are extremely complicated, many of them do require ingredients that most people just wouldn’t find in their kitchens on an average Wednesday night. If you plan on entertaining, however, this book will be a great resource for you.

A few of the recipes that particularly caught my eye are:

  • Roasted Carrot, Orange, and Avocado Salad
  • Brined Chicken with Roasted Zucchini and Tapenade
  • Fresh Peaches, Smoked Mozzarella, and Aged Balsamic
  • Bittersweet Chocolate and Wild Strawberry Tart

This book is scheduled to release on April 8th, but if you jump on Amazon, it looks like they’re shipping out orders a bit early.  (One of my favorite things about pre-ordering cookbooks from Amazon!)
