I’m always looking to broaden my horizons in the kitchen, learning to make new things that will challenge me and keep things interesting.

Because I’m a woman who bores easily.

The challenge comes in trying to figure out what to make that will be challenging.

And now I realize that it looks like I could use a thesaurus…it’s Monday, let it go.

Anyway, I was pleased as could be when this showed up in my mailbox recently.

Cook like a pro? Sign me up! Teach me Obi-Wan…I’m ready to become a kitchen jedi.

bon_appetit_2So, I came across this article teaching you step by step how to make Kouign-Amann, something I’d never tried before. But, from what I could tell, it was pastry…basically dough, butter, and sugar. What on earth could possibly be wrong with that?

Nothing, as it turns out. Nothing at all.

But, we’re getting there……

So, after gathering up all of my ingredients, I was ready to start the lengthy, but not all that labor intensive, recipe. Don’t think you’re going to start this on a Friday afternoon and serve it to your guests Friday night, this recipe requires a lot of chilling time, so you’ll want to be in it for the long haul.

So, check out a few step by step images of the process….

bon_appetit_7I love European style butter. Seriously, the color…it’s gorgeous.

And be prepared to do a lot of rolling. You may go to bed that night with sore muscles around your shoulder blades.

Or maybe that’s just me…possibly a sign from the universe that I need to work out my arms more often.

bon_appetit_9Now, they’re ready to pop into the oven…

After baking and a bit of cooling, here’s what you have…

bon_appetit_12Kouign-Amann is buttery, flavorful, flaky, and delicious and will make you feel like a true kitchen jedi after you’ve finished making them. It’s a perfect treat for breakfast, for dessert, or even for a snack if you’re feeling adventurous. It was a hit with me and a hit with my kids…well worth the effort.

If you’d like to try your hand at Kouign-Amann, pick up a copy of Bon Appetit, or find the recipe online here.

Happy baking!
