I’m finally getting things back in order around here after a crazy weekend. We got several inches of wet, heavy snow and unfortunately, that which we expected to happen, did in fact, happen.
Power outages.
Our power was out for 12….hours….
I know, I know, in the grand scheme of things, that’s really not bad. Knowing the linesmen were out working their hardest to restore everyone’s power made me more patient. It does now, however, make children more patient.
No TV, no Wii, no WiFi….it was rough for a little while there. Picture children just laying around staring, at absolutely nothing at all.
I’m thankful that this was our first substantial snow of the season, so they were all too happy to head outside and play in it. After that, all was well. We played Monopoly (which they have waaaay more patience for than I do…) and constructed the most intricately decorated gingerbread house I’ve ever built in all my days.
When the power finally did come back on, we cheered like we’d never had electricity ever before in our lives…and then all resumed to normal.
If you’re entertaining guests this Christmas, you’ll definitely be looking for something to decorate the center of your table. Floral arrangements from your local florist are a great idea, but if that’s not in your holiday budget, I’ve got a suggestion that will be festive, smell great, and cost around $5.00.
I picked up a bag of clementine oranges and some Christmas greens at my local grocery store and created this simple Christmas centerpiece. You could use the larger oranges if you’d like, but I chose the smaller ones because that’s what my family will eat. Don’t buy anything that’s just going to go to waste!
The process is pretty simple.
Grab a tray that you already have on hand. I wanted to use a silver tray that I own, but it’s been packed away and I wasn’t able to find it. That’s what I get for being organized…once….
Next, pile up your oranges in the center of the tray. They’re going to shift and roll and move around as you’re working, it’ll get annoying, but it’s not the end of the world.
Start adding your greens. There’s no right or wrong way to do this. It’s your house, it’s your centerpiece. If you like how it looks, it’s perfect.
And it will smell amazing.
If you’re going to have someone watching the centerpiece like a hawk, you can add some taller taper candles…or just play it safe and go with flameless ones. Nothing will ruin your holiday entertaining faster than a fire.
If you want to switch it up a bit, you could use other items from your produce section…pomegranates would be a great choice as well. Just go with what you like and have fun!
