Let’s Chat Food Photography Tips

Over the past year or so, I’ve started working with clients on some food photography projects and let me tell you, I love it.

A lot.

My camera and I have become the best of buds.

I’ve discovered a few food photography tips that I thought I’d share with anyone who wants to get into projects like this.  My tip for today is this…BE SURE TO SHOW YOUR VERSATILITY.

I like to do a specific type of food photography for my website, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only kind of photography I can do.  I find my “happy zone” in the dark and moody images.  To me, they’re lovely and artsy and always resonate with me when I see them.  But, that’s not necessarily what someone else may like.  So, it’s important to show your versatility.

While I may want something like this on my website:

…or this…

The company/publication I’m working for may not dig it.  So, I’ll show my versatility by sharing something like this…

…or this…

It’s much lighter and brighter, but still shows a hint of my style. I didn’t change much.  By simply lightening up the background and using a lighter prop on the bottom, I can completely change the look of this photo.  Since I’m going for a specific look for my website, though, I may not share the brighter pictures in a post.  Instead, I’ll save them for my food photography portfolio (coming soon to the site) and use that as a way to showcase what I can do.

So, if you’re looking to get into working with companies/publications on food photography jobs, remember that you need to have your own style, but it’s important to show that you’re more than just a one trick pony.  Experiment and find what works for you!

Happy Friday!
