Let’s talk cookies today, shall we? Or rather, I guess cakes….or maybe cookie sized cakes? I don’t really know for certain, but what I do know is that whatever it is, it’ll be tasty. Not familiar with Jaffa Cakes? Let me fill you in. Any person who claims to be a Whovian will be familiar with a cookie called a Jammie Dodger. So, while shopping for sources to send me some Jammie Dodgers, I came across one of those, “If you like this, try this” posts that was trying to sell me on some Jaffa Cakes. I was instantly skeptical. I’m not much of a fan or orange and chocolate together, but the reviews on these treats were pretty convincing. A thin layer of cake, topped with an orange gelatin mixture and then dark chocolate drizzled over the top of it all.
So, I gave it a go and ordered some. (I’m such a sucker for add-on purchases…they see me coming a mile away.) When they arrived, I was excited to give them a try, although I wasn’t expecting much. Again…orange and chocolate, not my fave. To my surprise, I was smitten.
They’re delicious.
The orange isn’t too overpowering and the chocolate that goes with it is perfect.
The cakes themselves are pretty simple, so I knew that making them at home had to be possible and probably not that difficult, so after a quick internet search I saw that one of my favorite food sites did a post on homemade Jaffa Cakes. So, to keep things simple, go there. Watch their video. Make their Jaffa Cakes. Enjoy them!
Side Note: Since the above recipe is from some fellas in England, their measurements are obviously different than we’d find here stateside, so let me just give you a quick run down on what I used:
50 grams of sugar = 1/4 cup
50 grams of flour = 1/4 cup again…
For the gelatin, I used a 3 ounce box of Jello dissolved in half as much water as stated on the recipe.
Other than that, you should be able to sort it all out. Good luck!
